How to Choose and Set Up Your Hazardous Waste Storage Area

One of the things that often gets forgotten during relocation is choosing a good spot for a hazardous waste storage area.

At some point, you will likely be part of a company that has to relocate for one reason or another. One of the things that often gets forgotten during relocation is choosing a good spot for a hazardous waste storage area. Making the waste area a priority during your move can actually save you a lot of costly problems down the road. It is far easier to set it up correctly in the first place than it is to make retroactive changes in the future.

Room to Grow

If you’re looking for a new space for your hazardous waste storage area, it is likely that your company is growing. With growth comes increased waste production. When you’re considering spaces for your waste room, it is important to choose an area that will accommodate your growing company.

Choosing a Location

Hazardous waste rooms tend to be pushed to the outskirts of company property. There are many reasons for this, safety being chief among them. Do be mindful of how close to your neighbors your waste room is. If you can, put the waste room somewhere close to your loading dock. This helps to save time and resources when transporting. It can also increase safety, because the less time the hazardous materials spend in transit, the safer they will be. Its worth noting that hazardous waste regulations in 40 CFR 262.17,state that large quantity generator containers, holding ignitable or reactive waste are required to be located at least 50 feet from the facility’s property line, unless a written approval is obtained from the authority having jurisdiction over the local fire code.

Ventilation Capabilities

When choosing a space for your hazardous waste room, ventilation is one of the most important considerations. Many types of hazardous materials emit fumes and vapors, and without anywhere to go they could create big problems. Even if your waste room is well ventilated, you should monitor the air inside just in case additional PPE will be needed for safety.
