Dry ice blasting propels small pellets at very high speeds. When directed at residue that seems to be stuck on something, the process takes it right off and you’re left with a clean, contaminant-free surface. Dry ice blasting does not use any chemicals or cleaning solutions. Despite the high-velocity pellets, it is actually a minimally abrasive cleaning method. To know what makes dry ice blasting such an effective cleaning method, you should first understand a bit about how it works!
Kinetic Energy Transfer
Because the dry ice pellets are being blasted at extremely high speed, they impact the surface with a great deal of kinetic energy. This energy is then transferred through the surface causing the residue to come off with ease. The impact of the pellets is essentially causing hundreds of tiny little explosions in very quick succession, which prevents dirt and residue from sticking to a surface.
Temperature Shock
Along with traveling extremely quickly, the dry ice pellets are also quite cold. The low temperature causes residue and particulates to freeze and crack off. Stuck on substances aren’t used to that kind of cold, so the sudden shock of extreme cold causes things to just fall off, without the use of abrasive and possibly harmful chemicals.
Solid to Gas
It’s pretty common knowledge that like dry ice blasting, hydro-blasting shoots water at extremely high speeds. At the end of the hydro-blasting, however, you’re left with a big, wet mess. Dry ice blasting doesn’t do that. In their frozen state, the pellets are solid. As the temperature rises, they melt directly into a gas. No harsh or abrasive chemicals and no mess to clean up makes dry ice blasting the clear winner!
