Personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary for all employees who work with hazardous substances. If people get exposed to these substances, it can result in serious risks to their health. Depending on which hazardous materials are present in the workplace, the equipment you use to protect yourself can change. We’ve discussed types of PPE you can wear in the past, but there are other types of PPE that we’ve yet to discuss. Here are more kinds of personal protective equipment that you may need to wear.
Face & Eye Protection
Some workers have to deal with materials that threaten face and eye damage. It could be flying debris, dust, or chemical splashes, among other things. Regardless of which hazard is present in the workplace, wearing face and eye protection is a must.
Such types of personal protective equipment you might wear could include face shields, welding helmets, or safety goggles. By wearing these types of PPE in the workplace, you won’t have to be at risk of damage to your vision, or to other parts of your face.
Hand/Arm Protection
Having personal protective equipment for your hands and arms is also important. Some hazardous conditions can put workers’ hands and arms at risk of being cut, fractured, or amputated. Other hazardous conditions could present risks of radiation or electrical shocks.
There are special types of gloves workers can wear that shield against all types of hazards they may encounter.. When wearing these gloves, you must consider the size of the gloves, the lining type, and the cuff type. Also, understand that gloves can only provide a certain amount of resistance. Depending on the chemicals with which you’re working, and how long you’re exposed to them, it’s possible that even specialized gloves won’t be able to provide sufficient protection and resistance.
Foot/Leg Protection
In some situations, people might find themselves in work environments that present injury risks to their feet and legs. Perhaps there are extremely hot substances in the vicinity. Maybe there are corrosive or poisonous materials nearby. People could also be in work environments in which objects could fall onto their legs or feet.
Due to these types of risks, OSHA advises that workers wear the proper foot and leg protection. Such protection includes toe guards, shin guards, and insulated boots. Some workers may also want to wear leather leggings.
