Old Electronics: An Unexpected Hazard

With electronic devices being so integral to almost everyone’s daily lives and new models coming out so often, one can imagine how all the old tech would pile up quickly. Those old devices are classified as “e-waste” and require special protocols for safe disposal.

Whether your company is upgrading outdated tech, or you are switching to a new model of television in your home, you’re generating hazardous waste! There are many components inside of our electronics that can break down and harm the environment. With electronic devices being so integral to almost everyone’s daily lives and new models coming out so often, one can imagine how all the old tech would pile up quickly. Those old devices are classified as “e-waste” and require special protocols for safe disposal.

Out with the Old…

Did you know that there are around 500million unused cell phones just taking up space in peoples’ lives at any given time? That’s just the cell phones. Now add to that the old laptops and computers, TVs, GPS devices, and all the other old electronics that usually just end up in landfills. This mishandling led to the creation of the e-waste classification.

“The End of the Line” or A New Beginning?

Less than 13% of electronic waste is disposed of properly.  Most electronic devices contain several different materials that can be separated from one another, melted down, and re-used to create new products. This includes metals such as copper, tin, iron, and even silver and gold. Most also include some glass and plastic. Recycling these materials is hugely beneficial in that it helps to decrease costs associated with new devices and it keeps potentially dangerous pollutants out of the ground.
