The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that those who work with dangerous and hazardous materials are familiar with the various dangers and know how to handle them safely. Unfortunately, there’s really no way to make sure every employee remembers every hazard because some facilities could have over 100 different hazardous materials or chemicals at any given time. This is why OSHA came up with safety data sheets (formerly known as material safety data sheets or MSDS). These valuable tools help everyone in your facility stay safe.
IDENTIFYING THE MATERIAL
Safety data sheets start by identifying the molecular properties of the material. Since not everyone is a scientist, there is also a list of trade names or brand names that the material may also be identified by. This can be particularly helpful in the event of a fire or chemical spill.
LIST OF INGREDIENTS
Many hazardous materials are actually made up of several different dangerous ingredients. Safety data sheets list all of the different parts of a given material so that the ingredients’ individual hazards can be identified.
CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
When working with hazardous materials, ensuring the safety of the facility and everyone there is of the utmost importance. Identifying the chemical and physical properties of substances helps to prevent dangerous accidents. The appearance and smell of the material are described on the safety data sheets, as well as its flash point and boiling point. The sheet will also give information about the material’s specific gravity, vapor pressure, solubility, and pH level.
Safety data sheets are specifically designed to keep those who work with hazardous materials safe. There should be safety data sheets for every hazardous material in a facility easily available for any employee to reference whenever they need to.
